EMDR Therapy: What It Is and How It Can Help
Having completed the EMDR Europe Accredited Training, I am a qualified Level 4 EMDR therapist. What is EMDR? EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, an evidence-based integrative psychotherapy approach. Originally developed for treating trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), EMDR has since been recognized for its effectiveness in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, behavioral difficulties, and relationship problems. EMDR is endorsed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as a recommended treatment for PTSD. (Source: NICE, 2018; EMDR UK, 2023). How Does EMDR Work? When individuals experience traumatic or disturbing events, the mind and body usually process these experiences over time, allowing natural healing to occur. However, sometimes the memory of the trauma doesn’t fully process and becomes "stuck," causing ongoing distress. EMDR therapy helps to "unlock" these memories, allowing the natural healing process to resume, and often does so more quickly than traditional talk therapies like counselling. The therapy works by targeting the distressing memory and using specific techniques—such as guided eye movements or tapping—to reduce the emotional intensity of the memory. This helps you process the memory without becoming overwhelmed by it. Benefits of EMDR Therapy Research shows that EMDR therapy can achieve significant therapeutic benefits in a relatively short period, often much faster than traditional therapies. Many clients experience a reduction in distress from traumatic memories in as few as six sessions. For those with more complex issues, additional sessions may be required, but the therapy often results in profound, long-lasting change. EMDR therapy demonstrates how psychological trauma can heal in much the same way that physical trauma does. Just like when you cut your hand and your body works to close the wound, if an injury irritates the wound, it can cause pain and delay healing. Similarly, when emotional wounds are "stuck," they cause distress. EMDR helps remove the blocks preventing healing, allowing the mind to process and heal the trauma naturally. Why Choose EMDR Therapy?
